Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) fired hundreds of its probationary workers.
As massive layoffs continue to happen across the country, it could impact more than just wallets.
Who is this impacting?
OU Chief of Psychology Dr. Britta Ostermeyer said being laid off is a huge stressor, and for some, it can be life-changing.
Ostermeyer said it is not only the person being laid off who is affected. It is also family members, co-workers, and the community.
How does this affect others?
“It is a negative impact on the job; the atmosphere will not be a happy one, of course. and everybody will feel the impact,” said Ostermeyer of the employees still with their respective companies.
She adds that families will feel the stress of finances and the worry of how bills will get paid.
Ostermeyer says that this impact spills over into various communities. She recommends coming together and supporting one another through places like local churches.
Ostermeyer says layoffs can create a potential downward spiral.
“Persons who may not have had a problem in the past may actually slip into an alcohol or drug problem because of this tremendous, tremendously stressful situation,” said Ostermeyer.
She said that those who may have battled addiction in the past could relapse.
Ostermeyer said the stress of a layoff can result in loss of sleep, anxiety, or depression.
Ostermeyer recommends controlling what you can through a routine.
“That's very important, especially exercise or just walking or sitting outdoors, or going, pursuing a hobby,” added Ostermeyer.
