A memorial for a fallen Cleveland County Deputy is vandalized.
Deputy Jordan Pyle’s memorial patrol car was place outside the Cleveland County Courthouse after her death, and served as a memorial where the community could pay their respects. Until September 8, when someone vandalized the vehicle.
“It's very unsettling to us, we can't understand what would compel someone to do such a thing,” said Lt. Brooke Gaines with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office.
Surveillance cameras caught someone vandalizing her patrol car.
“This person not only did this once but came back a second time to do this twice,” said Lt. Gaines.
In both instances, the sheriff’s department said the suspect used an unknown object to scratch the entire passenger side of the vehicle, causing $3,000 in damages.
“Jordan’s mother, her brother, her son and I are so disappointed that someone would vandalize the car she drove while protecting the citizens of Cleveland County,” said Rusty Pyle, Jordan’s father.
The criminal act only adds to the family’s grief. Pyle was shot and killed inside her home last month. Her husband, Deputy Vaughn Cannon, was charged in her death.
“She was a wonderful, caring person who did not deserve to be taken by this senseless and violent act,” Pyle said. “We worried constantly about her safety while working as a deputy but never imagined her life would be taken by someone we welcomed into our family.”
Her coworkers are also still dealing with the loss.
“It’s going to be a long journey,” Lt. Gaines said. “We're still hurt and it's just one of them things that we just got to take it a day at a time.”
The car was taken to a secure location to be repaired, while detectives still search for the suspect.
“We just want to let whoever did this know that they will be held accountable,” said Lt. Gaines. “Our detectives are working around the clock to bring that person to justice.”
The suspect faces facing two counts of felony malicious mischief.
