Garfield Co. Voters To Determine Fate Of Sales Tax Proposal For Jail

Garfield County residents are asked to approve a sales tax proposal to fund expanding the county jail.

The Criminal Justice Authority Chairman said the proposal went on the ballot in August of last year but instead of a 20 year term, it was reduced to 15.

If the sales tax is approved it would increase 30 cents on every $100 spent. 

Wedel said the jail has been overcrowded for nearly 15 years despite taking steps to reduce the number of inmates being held.

The election will be held on May 9th.
