The Moore Police Department is giving citizens a chance to learn what it's like to be a police officer.

David Dickinson, a Moore Police Department Community Service Officer, said this is a great way to learn.

"It's a way for them to see their police officers and what they do," Dickinson said. "We have a firearms simulator that the students can participate in, and we get to go an drive cars and things that citizens can participate in."

The academy lasts for eight weeks, and attendees meet every other Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"A lot of the officers that do this and volunteer their time let their personalities out," Dickinson said.

Participants must be 21 or older to sign up, there is a simple application and a background check, but the course is completely free.

"We'll set it up in the parking lot outside of the police department," Dickinson said. "Set up some scenarios walk them through give them a little bit of training."

Dickinson said part of the mission is to search for those who may be effective volunteers.

"This is what we do, and this is something behind the scenes that nobody ever sees," Dickinson said.
