The CDC says that during the holiday season, there are more drug and alcohol-related deaths than at any other time of the year.

A local nonprofit that's helping women step away from addiction, not just during Christmas but all year round.

Those behind the scenes at "One Choice Away" help women get clean by providing a stable foundation, and they are in process of expanding.

They believe if they can change habits, they can change lives.

"We have a passion to help women with their coping skills when life is just kind of off track," said One Choice Away Co-Founder Kara Whitson.

One choice away is a home for women who are ready to put their addiction aside.

"We like to teach these women those life skills on a one-on-one level and we help our women achieve those long-term or short-term goals," said One Choice Away Co-Founder Brittany Pole.

Beyond just a safe place to stay, Resident Jamie Taylor said, everyone here is learning new habits, they are working, going to school, paying rent, even volunteering,

"We go and we give back what we took for granted."

Jamie is one of seven women living in the house,

"I had relapsed, and I wanted some help and I was recommended to One Choice Away," said Taylor.

She knows first-hand that addiction is a disease and no matter how badly someone wants a different life it can be overwhelming to even try to break free.

"In my life, I have never been so close to suicide than I was three months ago, and I was so tired I knew what to do but it was that I don't want to start over, but I did it," said Taylor.

"We ultimately teach them that you are responsible for your own life. The action that you take is ultimately going to be where you end up," said Whitson

Jamie says it was the best decision she ever could have made.

"I was able to get a car, I've enrolled in college which is something I thought I would never do," said Taylor

One Choice Away is moving into a bigger house to help more women and kids as well.

They need furniture and monetary donations to make it happen.
