Family Seeks Justice For Loved One Who Was Murdered Nearly 40 Years Ago

A Tulsa family said they are long overdue for justice and want answers for a murder that's been cold for nearly 40 years.

Edna Higgs was murdered on Sept 24, 1985 at the liquor store where she worked. Her family needs answers and believes someone knows something.

A book of memories is what Judy and Erin Wheeler have to remember a beloved mother and grandmother, Edna Higgs.

“She was hardworking, no nonsense, a great mother and terrific grandmother," said Judy Wheeler.

Judy said her mother could tackle just about any task. She had two kids and a loving husband, and she owned a liquor store near Pine and Lewis. They owned it together for nearly 20 years.

“They were in that business for a lot of years and made many friends. People missed her when she was gone.”

On Sept 24, 1985, someone shot and killed Edna during an armed robbery.

“Casey met me at the store and told me she was gone," said Judy. "I mean, it's been 37 years, but you don't get over it ever.”

Judy said she thought the case would be quickly closed, but nobody was ever arrested. Now the case is cold and they're worried time is running out.

“Someone, a family member, whatever knows exactly what happened," Judy said.

Judy and Erin are desperate for someone to come forward, and hope Tulsa Police cold case investigators can test previous evidence with new technology.

“I don't know if they had dug into that, or there is some evidence there that could be run," said Erin.

They said Edna deserves justice, and it’s past time for someone to speak up.

“I was 35 when she was murdered. I'm 72 now, I would like to see it solved quickly -- before I am gone," Judy said.

Cold case investigators said they welcome any information on this case. The family said they're willing to offer a large reward and are working with Crime Stoppers.
