A recent University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) graduate made an incredible recovery after a horrific crash overseas.

Alexis Garcia graduated in December of 2021 and the first thing he wanted to do was to see the world.

“My first stop was to Norway to go snowboard and then I went to Jordan to see the City of Petra, like, on my bucket list is the seven wonders of the world is my bucket. I went from Jordan to Dubai, and Dubai to Thailand,” Alexis said.

Garcia's three-month vacation turned into unexpected six months abroad. He spent most of it in a hospital after a motorcycle accident on the way to the airport left him critically injured.

“I was underneath the truck and everything. Once I seen the video, I was like 'oh my gosh',” Garcia said.

Doctor's told Garcia's family he had blood poisoning caused by bacteria and he only had a five percent chance of living.

“My son was going up down up down up down,” Lilliana Garcia, Alexis’ mom said.

Garcia couldn't walk, or talk. He also experienced vision and memory loss.

“I did feel very depressed honestly. I was just tired of all the pain, tired of lying-in bed all day. I didn't want my parents to worry so I kind of just put a mask on,” Garcia said.

Garcia went through several surgeries and was treated for multiple infections.

“I just asked God if you do this. I wanted my son to be removed from the ventilator and I promised I would shave my hair,” Lilliana Garcia said.

The next day, things started turning around. Garcia was improving quicker than expected, so his mom got a new haircut.

After three months in the hospital, Garcia made it back home to Oklahoma in June.

“It was definitely a relief to see family again. I mean it's been six months,” Garcia said.

He said he's looking forward to making up for lost time with family and his pal Roscoe.

Garcia said he still has a long and costly road to recovery. CLICK HERE to donate.
