An uptick in heat related calls has EMSA concerned as we head into a stretch of hot weather.
Many Oklahomans enjoyed the warmer weather over the weekend that is expected to continue throughout the week.
“You have to be really vigilant about the heat because it is not expected to get any cooler any time soon. Are you a little bit dizzy, slightly nauseous, do you have some body aches?” said Adam Paluka, the Chief EMSA Public Affairs Officer.
While it’s good to get out and be active EMSA wants people to be aware.
“Heat stroke is serious it can be deadly, if your body stops sweating that is a big, big red flag that you could be in some danger related to heat stroke,” he said.
Paramedics responded to 14 heat related calls statewide over the weekend, nine of the patients ended up in the hospital. That number went up Monday after EMSA responded to five heat related calls in the OKC service area, one of those was also sent to the hospital.
“That is what is most concerning because it means their symptoms were serious enough for them to be taken to the hospital,” he said.
Paluka said anyone outside for more than 15 minutes should be well hydrated, take breaks in the shade, and have sunscreen.
“The number one thing any parent should do is ask that camp if there are scheduled breaks in the shade or ac for their kids,” he said.
That also goes for those cooling down in the pool.
“As long as they are outside and exposed to sunlight in or out of water, they still need to be taking those precautions,” he said.
It’s also a good idea to check on elderly neighbors or family who live alone and may think turning off the AC to save a buck is a good idea.
“It’s important we protect those who are extremely young and those who are elders,” said Paluka.
