You could get reimbursed if you bought an at-home COVID test within the last few days, thanks to a new effort from the Biden-Harris Administration.
Insurance companies and group health plans will be required to cover the costs of at-home COVID tests.
Rapid tests are in high demand and supply continues to stay limited according to the Oklahoma Insurance Department.
"We know there is a lot of frustration out there in being able to acquire these at home tests," Rhoads said. "I think this will be remediated in the next 30-60 days."
But the federal government is working to change it.
Mike Rhoads, Deputy Commissioner of the Oklahoma Insurance Department shared with News 9 some important things to know about this initiative.
Through this new program, consumers with private health insurance will be able to get up to 8 tests every 30 days.
However, there are a few caveats.
First, consumers can only get FDA approved COVID testing kits. If you are unsure if a test is FDA approved or not, ask your pharmacist.
Second, the pharmacy you purchase your test at must be in network with your insurance.
There are two ways to get a test for free.
You can go directly to the pharmacy with your insurance card, or you can buy one elsewhere then file a claim.
Rhoads says you must keep at your receipts and attach it to your reimbursement form.
Insurance companies will only reimburse up to $12 per test.
If you are purchasing from an out of network pharmacy, you will be required to pay out of pocket, and you won't be reimbursed.
If you file a claim, expect to be reimbursed within 30 days.
