Oklahoma City Public Schools will be offering a $3,000 recruitment bonus for bilingual teachers that join their team.
"We feel like being bilingual in one of the three foreign languages spoken in our school district it is a way to add a highly qualified and high-quality teacher in front of our students," said Jason Brown, the Deputy Superintendent of OKCPS.
Brown said teachers must be bilingual in one of three languages, Spanish, Vietnamese or Burmese.
They must also be evaluated by the districts language and cultural services department to qualify.
"They've developed an assessment that they give not only bilingual instructors, but also teaching assistants to measure their level of fluency,” Brown said.
Brown believes the push to get bilingual teachers in their classrooms will help students socially emotionally and academically.
“It goes beyond just representation,” Brown said. “While we feel like representation is important across the board it also goes to add a higher quality of instruction if there is something you have to relate and you can’t in English you have a different format and a different venue.”
OKCPS is also looking for teachers in math, science and special education. They are offering $1,500 for those teachers that sign on and can be combined with the bilingual stipend.
“Until we are 100% full in every classroom with high quality teachers we won’t be satisfied,” Brown said.
