A Tulsa man is in the hospital recovering after he was shot by a Tulsa Police officer after a house fire Wednesday.

Police were called to help firefighters responding to a house fire near 56th Street North and Peoria when they said a man pulled out a knife and ran at officers.

Police say the person was given orders to stop, then tased twice, finally officer shot the person as they continued to advance. The person was transported to the hospital, no police were hurt in the incident.

Tulsa fire marshals are working to determine if this was an arson fire and they hope to get answers from the man taken to the hospital.

While putting out the fire at the house, firefighters found a man in the parked car in the driveway. Firefighters asked him if anyone was inside and they said he answered with only, "it's on fire." Firefighters called police to talk with the man.

“So being in the driveway or something not supposed to be that close to the house he was uncooperative with them," said Tulsa Officer Danny Bean.

Bean said officers tried to get the man out of the car and away from the fire scene where firefighters were working. “Any kind of commands that we gave to him for his safety and for ours he was very uncooperative," said Bean.

He said the man pulled out a knife and officers immediately told him to drop it.

“To put the knife down to cooperate with us and come quietly. What happens at some point he charges and comes at officers with a knife a taser was used unsuccessfully on the subject," said Bean.

He said officers tased the man twice, but he kept running toward police with the knife.

“He still kept coming at officers and an officer then fired rounds, striking the subject where he was transported to a local hospital," said Bean. He said they are still trying to figure out why he was at the home and how the fire started.

“We don’t know why he was here or what his process was here at the house," said Bean.
