When the OU Ruf/Neks take to the sidelines during OU football games next fall, they will be less like a fraternity and more like cheerleaders, school officials said.

The Ruf/Neks will return to the sidelines next year as an official OU spirit squad. The move placed the group under university control, said Kenny Mossman, associate athletic director. The decision comes after 25 members of the group were suspended for allegedly hazing Ruf/Nek pledges last year, he said.

"They've got a proud tradition that goes back a longtime here and I don't think we want to disregard that at all," Mossman said.

Mossman said officials thought to keep the Ruf/Neks tradition alive, they needed to oversee the group. Now, like cheerleaders, Ruf/Neks are going to have to try out and win a position on the squad before gearing up for game day.

Try outs for next year's Ruf/Neks begin Friday. Unlike years past the group will now have minimum GPA and credit hour requirements.

Students said they were looking forward to the Ruff-Neks returning to games.

"I'm ready for all the drama to die down and to get the Ruf/Neks back," student Lauren Brockman said.
