I just interviewed former Weatherford High School pitcher Dillon Overton at the Oklahoma Sports studio. Well air a couple of sound bites Friday night at 6p and 10p. He is just back from Boston where he worked out for the Red Sox, but decided to go to OU instead. He was Bostons 26th Round pick in this years draft.

Can you imagine what a tough decision that has to be for a young man? He pitched two innings and struck out four of the six batters he faced during his workout. But Overton said the Red Sox didnt offer him as much as he hoped, so hes going to get bigger and stronger in college and hopefully get more money in three years or so.

That makes him sound greedy, but he couldnt be a more soft-spoken, friendly kid. I dont think hes being greedy. I think hes being smart.

He actually pitched in Fenway Park in a Red Sox jersey!!! How sweet is that? For a kid who grew up loving baseball and dreaming of being in the big leagues...that would be hard to walk away from.

Kudos to the kid for choosing an education over the immediate cash. I wish him the best. Im not sure I couldve had the same poise and wisdom when I was standing in the shadow of the Green Monster. Thats almost an unfair thing to do to a young man. I hope he has a great career for the Sooners and ends up signing with my Reds in three or four years for a lot more benjamins.
