State Rep. Sally Kern, (R - District 84) has pulled a controversial bill that would have prevented school teachers and counselors from referring students with questions about sexuality to other professionals without first contacting the student’s parents.

House Bill 3044 immediately received criticism from the LGBTQ community.

Kern told a committee, “There’s only one reason that I’m pulling this bill. It’s because, just today, it has come to my attention that there could be some unintended consequences that negatively affect the wonderful work of some 50 pregnancy resource centers across the state.”

Troy Stevenson with Freedom Oklahoma says he doesn't believe Kern pulled the bill because of a last minute change of heart. He says she didn't have the votes to move the bill forward.

“I’m proud of this committee for making sure that this bill was removed from consideration and will not become law in the state of Oklahoma.”  Stevenson said. “I believe that her colleagues understood this bill. I believe that they understood its ramifications and I believe that’s the only reason it came off.”

LGBTQ advocates tell us this is one of 25 bills they consider dangerous.
