Oklahoma has more job openings than unemployed residents, according to the head of the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, who says the challenge now is helping people find the right fit.
Trae Rahill, CEO of the OESC, said the state’s low unemployment rate is largely due to a labor market flush with openings.
“There are definitely jobs for people out there,” Rahill said. “Our job in workforce development is to make meaningful matches for people looking for work and finding the work that best suits them.”
Rahill said the future of Oklahoma’s economy is closely tied to strategic industries like aerospace, oil and gas, and manufacturing. He pointed to the growth of data centers and AI-related infrastructure as potential job creators, especially given Oklahoma’s affordable land and strong energy grid.
“There’s a lot of opportunity,” Rahill said. “We’re seeing a resurgence of the blue-collar worker, getting back into those trades that everything relies on.”
Rahill also emphasized that high school graduates have viable career options in trades without a four-year degree, while those seeking professional careers will find demand across multiple sectors.
