Advocates for Oklahoma’s aging population are encouraging seniors to make their voices heard at the Oklahoma State Capitol Monday morning.

Hundreds of seniors, as well as their family, friends and caregivers, are expected to gather at the Capitol for Oklahoma Senior Day, an annual event meant to put forward issues affecting Oklahoma's seniors.

The director of a local nonprofit dedicated to helping seniors will be one of those attending the annual event.

VillagesOKC executive director Marilyn Olsen says it is a way for seniors to meet legislators, find resources and connect with others.

“[Do] not let someone else speak for you,” Olsen said. “The goal is to be informed and speak up with what we want and make plans for that.”

Olson says she believes the more connections you have, the longer you will live, so she wants to motivate seniors to bond with each other.

Organizers behind Oklahoma Senior Day say they want to hear how seniors are growing strong in Oklahoma as well as what can change.

More than 300 people are registered to attend the event, which begins at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

The event runs until 1 p.m., with Oklahoma lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell expected to speak in addition to informational booths and allotted time for seniors to meet with legislators.
