News 9 was on the scene of the end of a pursuit on Wednesday involving a missing woman and a stolen car out of North Carolina. Officers used a tactical maneuver to stop the speeding car in northwest Oklahoma City.
Flock cameras first alerted Oklahoma City police at 9 a.m. about a stolen Dodge Challenger and a missing woman near Interstate 40 and Douglas Road. Police identified the driver as 31-year-old William Winburn.
Police said Winburn attempted to outrun officers and hit an SUV as the car blew through an intersection.
“I was just walking on Drexel down here and I seen this car come speeding by,” said Johnathon Rush, witness. “They was going pretty fast through neighborhoods.”
Johnathon Rush watched as police brought the pursuit to an end near northwest 29th Street and May Avenue. Rush said the lights and sirens reminded him of an earlier time in his life.
“I had got into some trouble when I was a youngster,” said Rush. “In the same situation.”
Police said the woman stayed in the car after it crashed out, but Winburn took off running. He quickly gave up and surrendered to officers.
“I’m glad it’s not me. You know?” said Rush. “I’m glad it ain’t me.”
Winburn and the woman allegedly told officers they took their friend's car for a cross-country road trip. Police said the woman was not kidnapped and willingly traveled with the man.
Police said the driver of the SUV hit by the pursuit suspect had minor injuries and was treated at the scene by fire crews.
Winburn was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on complaints of driving a stolen car, eluding police, and leaving the scene of an accident with damage.
