An Edmond family who lost its home in a fire last week is sharing its thanks with neighbors around the community.

On July 30, firefighters responded to their home near the 500 Block of Owens Avenue. It happened just days after the family had finished its annual back-to-school shopping.

The home is nearly a total loss. 13-year-old Eli O'Daniel was inside when it all began.

"There was a light in the living room that was smoking," he said. "Looked at it, called my dad, he told me to go outside. When I got outside, I stepped through this door, and I looked out and there was smoke everywhere. I couldn't see three feet."

GoFundMe for the family has already raised almost $5,000. Others have given in-kind donations, such as clothes and furniture.

The support has been overwhelming in a positive way.

"Can't say enough about how strong our community is," said Jay O'Daniel, Eli's father. "It means so much to us."

The family is planning to move into a new home on Monday. Jay O'Daniel said his kids are still ready and prepared for the school year.
