The Union City Police Department isn’t big, and neither is the town they serve and protect.

So, when some of their officers got COVID-19, they felt the impact quick.

“We’re a small police department and everyone is family so we’ve been dealing with COVID since it started,” said Captain Adam Taylor of Union City Police. “This is the first time it has impacted our department the way it has.

Two members of the department are currently in the ICU.

Including Chief Richard Stephens and one of his lieutenants, Brandon Owens.

Health officials say they're seeing an increase in cases in Canadian County as COVID cases spike nationwide.

Maggie Jackson, Interim Regional Administrative Director of Canadian County Health said they reported 11,312 new cases last week.

Canadian County Health says they don't track police officers, or first responders separate from other data but said that being a first responder puts people more at risk than other jobs.

Captain Adam Taylor is COVID free but feels the virus's impact.

“We’re getting by and making it happen, we have good officers and staff and volunteers that help us.”

If you’re interested in helping members of the department with covid, you can go to any BancFirst location (not just the Union City location) and donate money to help with medical expenses and groceries.
