Chaos erupted Saturday night at the Walmart in Belle Isle after a man reportedly shot at a security guard, police said.

According to police reports, 43-year-old Chartez Chappell tried to leave the store without paying for a bike. That's when security approached him.

"(A) struggle ensued," said Oklahoma City police Sgt. Dillon Quirk. "The security officer, who is actually an off-duty officer for another smaller agency, attempted to take this person into custody."

Reports said the officer then Tasered Chappell, as he fell to the floor. That's when he reached in his pocket and pulled out a gun and began firing.

"Next thing I heard was a boom, boom, boom," said Sheila Watts, a witness.

Watts said she planned on shopping at the Walmart later that night and was shocked when she realized the gunfire was coming from the store.

"About seven, eight minutes, I see nothing but law enforcement just everywhere," said Watts.

Officers were able to catch up with Chappell near the Chili's down the street. He was booked into the Oklahoma County jail on complaints of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, carrying a firearm after a conviction, and shoplifting.

Police said no one was hit by gunfire.

"Anytime we have a situation like that, it can be very dangerous," said Quirk. "Being that there's multiple families and people inside Walmart, we're definitely thankful that this ended in such a way that no one was injured or struck by gunfire."
