Students across the Oklahoma City metro said they wanted their voices to be heard in regards to death row inmate Julius Jones' case.

They said they're hoping Gov. Kevin Stitt accepts the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board's recommendation for clemency.

Hundreds of students walked out of several metro high schools.

“We walked out in honor of Julius Jones. He was a John Marshall alumnus and we really wanted to show to him. He was a really smart kid and I see him; we see him when we look in the mirror. He's one of us and we wanted to draw attention to this matter,” Alasia Smith said.

Jones is a currently on death row for the murder of Paul Howell. His execution is scheduled to happen at 4 p.m. Thursday.

“I think I became heartbroken just because I wouldn't imagine receiving a letter of execution for my son or my brother or whoever,” Amayah Harris said.

Students gathered with signs and some said Justice for Julius. They also held a moment of silence, praying for Jones' life. They said their voices do matter and this case is their concern as well.

“We're very educated and we're out here trying to set an example for everybody else. If there's something that you want to fight for fight for it because it matters. Anything matters and your voice is going to be heard,” Brooklyn Dean said.

Students ended their protest at the Capitol. They told News 9 if Jones is executed, they will not be in class. Instead, they will be rallying at the state Capitol.

OKCPS released the following statement addressing the walkouts:

"OKCPS supports our students’ rights to peaceful assembly and their freedom of expression. We have worked closely with students and student groups who wished to assemble today so we could provide them with a safe space to express themselves regarding an issue they are passionate about. Our top priority is always to support the academic and social emotional needs of our students while maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment for all."

Jones is set to be executed on Thursday if Governor Kevin Stitt does not grant him clemency.
