OKC Law Enforcement Reviews Suggestions To Community Policing

An 86-page report for the Oklahoma City Law Enforcement Task Force is packed with suggesting for changes the department can make moving forward. 

The report from 21CP Solutions put a significant focus on de-escalation, saying the department should require officers to provide a warning before using force. There have been more than 40 officer-involved shootings that have ended with a suspect dead since 2013. 

They also recommend appointing an administrative staff member to the citizen advisory board as a way to independently report on police activities, policies, procedures and rules. 

The report also suggested that the department consider hiring officers with mental health experience, certifications or degrees.  They also believe a crisis intervention committee with a focus on mental health could help across the city. 

The final focus was on the process of reporting officer-involved shootings.  

The report said there should be a shorter wait time before interviewing officers involved in those shootings and that officers should not be allowed to view their bodycam video beforehand. 

When the task force approves the final draft of recommendations, it will be presented to the City Council.
