Oklahoma City is encouraging people to come and claim their personal property that was taken into custody by police.

Thousands of unclaimed items are in the police's Property Management Unit, waiting to be reunited with their owners.

Some of these items include backpacks, car bumpers, jewelry, cash, TVs and handguns

They were either collected by police during an investigation, stolen property recovered by police or items found by police or residents.

Owners do need to be able to show officers proof that the property is yours.

“If it’s a stolen bike and we have it here in our property room and you’ve got a picture of you on that bike or some type of photo evidence, that will suffice,” said Oklahoma City police Master Sgt. Gary Knight. “You can’t just show up and say you lost a ring and look at rings.”

If one or more people claim an item, either party may request a hearing at district court to determine the rightful owner.

The city said the items will be stored in the police department’s Property Management Unit for three months. After that, the unclaimed items will be destroyed or sold at auction.

You can stop by the unit from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. For more information, call 405-297-1135.
