A man is dead after an incident at an asphalt silo in southeast Oklahoma City.

The construction company said the male worker was doing maintenance to clean out the asphalt silo when he slipped, fell and suffered a fatality.

Fire and paramedic crews were alerted and responded quickly Tuesday morning. The plant is on Sunnylane Road between SE 59th and Interstate 240.

The man fell about 25 feet. Temperatures in the silo can reach up to 320 degrees. Rescue crews came about 15 minutes later.

“The fire department received the call at around 11 a.m.,” said Oklahoma City fire Captain Scott Douglas. “In order to retrieve the body, they did have to drain the silo.”

They were unable to save the man.

“This is not a normal occurrence and we are deeply saddened,” said Jeffrey Taylor, TJ Campbell Construction spokesman. “We have not had this type of injury or incident like this in the history of the company.”

TJ Campbell Construction said the victim's father also worked at the plant.
