A homeowner's mission to slow down motorists running a Moore neighborhood stop sign sparked gunfire.

The exchange was captured on surveillance video.

When something caught his eye, Moore resident Vance Gibbs perched himself on a ladder and peered over his fence line.

“I saw some flashlights up there on the street and thought, 'OK, here it is,'” Gibbs said.

He said after one of the individuals, caught on camera, paintballed his house, he went inside and retrieved a CO2 pepper gun.

“I started shooting him with my burner and I hit him in the face. It's a plastic ball, a non-lethal weapon," said Gibbs.

The crowd scattered and then ran away.

“A guy yelled, 'you hit my son in the face.' I said, 'you've been tearing up my house,'” said Gibbs.

A short time later, they returned.

“They came back with a nine millimeter and started shooting,” said Gibbs.

Video showed the suspects take aim at Gibb’s dog.

“It really sucks because my dad knows him, and my dog has seen his dog and they played before,” a neighbor said.

After a series of muzzle flashes, Gibbs said he retrieved his real gun and returned gunfire, pointing at the ground as bullets whizzed past him and shattered a glass door.

The camera also capture the vandals breaking one of his security cameras, and tearing down his fence.

He said vandals have targeted him following his three-month long crusade to get drivers in his neighborhood to obey a stop sign at Bronze Medal Road near Northeast 8th.

Gibbs posts videos of the incidents to YouTube

“There's kids that walk home from school and cars fly by,” said Gibbs.

While Gibbs is known for trying to protect the neighborhood kids, they're now defending him.

“It makes me feel sad and angry. He was just trying to encourage people not to go so fast past the stop sign,” said neighbor Kaden McKee.

“(It's) Sad because he's just protecting the law,” said neighbor Austin Sanders.

Gibbs said while no one was hurt this time, it could end differently if it happens again.

“I’m not going to shoot at the ground next time. It's going to be me or him. I’m going to kill him if he does it again,” said Gibbs.

Moore police said they have located and identified several suspects. The case remains under investigation.
