The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety will open a "megacenter" dedicated to renewing driver’s licenses, commercial driver licenses and identification cards.
For many Oklahomans, trying to renew a driver license over the past year has been quite a headache. People started arriving at the brand new megacenter around 4:30 a.m. Monday.
Daniel Spray said he needs his driver's license to work.
"If I don't renew my license, I can't do my job. So I can't run my business because it requires the driver's license," Spray said.
All you must do is show up with your Oklahoma ID or driver's license. It is something that should help a lot of people, but it is important to note if for whatever reason you do not already have an Oklahoma driver's license, you cannot use the facility.
The center is open from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday starting on Monday, July 26. It is being housed on the second floor of 1000 NE 10th in Oklahoma City, formerly the Oklahoma State Department of Health building.
The megacenter is scheduled to remain open until December 10, although DPS spokeswoman Sarah Stewart said that is subject to change based on the demand for license renewal services.
DPS staff expects a lot of people to come out to these megacenters in Oklahoma City and Tulsa because of the backlog of online license renewals, which is between one and two months.
Stewart said DPS created new jobs just to get this facility up and running.
A second DPS megacenter opens on August 16 in Tulsa.
