A wild confrontation unfolded in Edmond as police scramble to stop a confrontation from escalating into a deadly incident.
A SWAT team ordered a man out of his apartment at gunpoint. Edmond police responded just north of the University of Central Oklahoma stadium where they were told two men armed with weapons were arguing.
Two people called 911 and told dispatchers Harold Hughes was enraged.
One of those callers was his girlfriend, police said.
Police: "Let me see your hands. Walk towards me, Harold."
Police raced to an apartment complex near Danforth and Chowning after they received panicked calls to 911.
Caller: "This guy’s got a knife, he's got a machete, a knife, screaming, talking about he's going to kill somebody because they were looking at his partner. I don't know."
Caller: "There's a guy waiving a pistol around in my apartment complex. He's a big white guy and he's pointing it at his neighbor."
Police said Hughes was armed with a gun along with his neighbor.
Caller: "The neighbor is outside. A black male with a machete. He's defending his apartment?"
Those witnessing the event were sure violence was about to erupt and even feared of getting caught in between.
Caller: "I’m getting off the phone so I can get out of here. I got to go. Sorry."
911: "Ma'am, need you to stay so I can get some information from you."
Then, police officers showed up.
Police: "Backwards and walk towards me. Keep walking, Bubba."
After several minutes, the officers were able to coax Hughes from his apartment.
Police: "My partner is going to put you in handcuffs. Just cooperate, please, Harold."
Once the apartment was cleared, Hughes had no explanation regarding the confrontation. He did explain why he didn't answer the door.
Hughes: "I was in there playing Xbox. I didn't even hear you knocking, man. I had my headphones on."
Hughes was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon.
