OU Medicine’s Chief Quality Officer Dr. Dale Bratzler gave an update on COVID-19 in Oklahoma Friday.

Bratzler addressed a map released by Gov. Kevin Stitt earlier this week, which breaks down risk by county.

According to the doctor, it’s one of many maps and tools available to track the spread of the virus.

“We noticed that there was almost an I-44 corridor through Oklahoma, where you have people traveling through the higher density population areas of the state, where we are seeing more infections actually happening and more community spread of the virus,” Bratzler said.

Going off data from OU Medicine, Dr. Bratzler said people should still be careful.

“This past week, we saw a substantial increase in the number of new cases that are happening in people that are 65 years of age and older,” Bratzler said.

Bratzler reiterated the need for social distancing. He also recommended a mask mandate.

“I strongly agree we should mandate masks at this point because we’re seeing such unmitigated spread of the virus in our population in Oklahoma right now,” Bratzler said.
