Law Enforcement Remembers Canadian Co. Deputy Killed In NW OKC Crash

Loved ones and coworkers are honoring the memory of Canadian County deputy, Lt. Shirley Lanning.

Lanning was killed in a crash on Northwest Expressway Friday.

Through her life, Lanning served numerous departments in the metro area.

In the 1990’s, Lanning worked at the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office.

On Facebook, the department shared a special message reading, “Our condolences to the Canadian County Sheriff's Office, we grieve with them as Shirley Lanning worked in our office for several years in the 90’s.”

Canadian County Sheriff Chris West said Oklahoma County Sheriff P.D. Taylor sent him a message of condolences.

“He sent me a text and said, ‘You know, you lost a good one. Everybody loved her and she's really going to be missed,” West said of Taylor’s message.

According to West, Lanning also served at the University of Central Oklahoma’s police department, before working for Canadian County.

UCO sent News 9 a statement reading, “Our hearts are heavy with the news that our former UCO Police colleague, Shirley Lanning, was killed in a car accident this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and colleagues at the Canadian County Sherriff’s Department.”

At Canadian County, Captain Adam Flowers was Lanning’s direct supervisor.

“She was a go-getter, a person that you could always rely on. People loved her. We loved her.  It was tough to lose, not just a good deputy, but a great friend,” Flowers said.

Along with her public service, Lanning made a lasting impact on friends and family, according to West.

“We continue to ask for prayers and support for not only our family here at the Sheriff's Office, but her husband as well. Her family, her mother and father live in rural Oklahoma. They could sure use the support,” West said.
