OKLAHOMA CITY -- Lt. Gov.-elect Todd Lamb says he will resign his state Senate seat effective Jan. 10.

Lamb submitted an "irrevocable letter of resignation" on Monday to Secretary of State Susan Savage.

Lamb currently represents Senate District 47, which covers parts of Edmond and northwest Oklahoma City. He was elected lieutenant governor in November, but has two years remaining on his Senate term.

The governor must call a special election to fill the vacant seat.

Carol Hefner announced her candidacy for Lamb's seat Monday. She is a wife and mother of five.

Hefner said her most important qualification is that she's a conservative Republican who has not spent her life working in politics.
