OKLAHOMA CITY -- Gun dealers across Oklahoma are checking their records, looking for a serial number that could help solve the murders of two young girls.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has released the serial number of a gun agents believe was used to kill two Weleetka girls in 2008. Skyla Whitaker, 11, and Taylor Placker, 13, were gunned down on a rural dirt road. The investigation into their deaths has turned up few clues. Until now.

The OSBI says a 40-caliber Glock 22 with the serial number EKG463US was used in the murders. Right now, the OSBI believes the gun is still in Oklahoma but the agency's spokesperson says if it doesn't turn up within a few weeks, investigators may start looking outside the state.

"We're hoping that someone who perhaps purchased that weapon at a Tulsa gun show in March would bring it forward," OSBI spokesperson Jessica Brown said.

The weapon is popular among law enforcement and private gun owners. It's also a big seller with gun dealers. Trent Painter with H & H Gun Range in Oklahoma City says employees went through the business's records after OSBI released the serial number.

"We went through all our required ATF records to look at those firearms, and we found no such entry in our logs incoming or outbound," Painter said.

OSBI agents are asking gun owners to take a look at the serial numbers on their weapons to make sure they don't have the gun used in the shootings. Brown says the person who owns the gun was not involved in the murders. They could get a $5,000 reward for bringing the gun forward.
