A new addition to Tulsa Community College’s popular “I Can’t” workshop series is aiming to bust the myth that film careers require a move to Hollywood or New York.
The Tulsa Film Collective, co-founded by Emmy-winning filmmaker and MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient Sterlin Harjo, is joining the series to lead a session titled “I Can’t Work in Film.”
The free workshop is scheduled for Saturday, June 28, at 10 a.m. and will give aspiring filmmakers a look into the city’s growing film industry.
The session promises behind-the-scenes access to local productions—like FX’s “Reservation Dogs”—and practical advice on breaking into acting, screenwriting, camera work, and production while staying based in Tulsa.
“Tulsa Film Collective brings the real-world insight and energy that makes this series so powerful. We’re excited to have them on board,” said Annina Collier, dean of the Center for Creativity.
The in-person event is already full, but a waitlist is available via Eventbrite. The session will also be livestreamed at no cost, and more free workshops are scheduled throughout the month.
Interested participants can register for other upcoming “I Can’t” sessions on the Center for Creativity website.
Launched by TCC’s Thomas K. McKeon Center for Creativity, the “I Can’t” series features creative, skill-building workshops taught by local organizations.
Each workshop encourages adults to step out of their comfort zones in a supportive environment. All sessions are held at 910 S. Boston Ave. with free parking in any TCC lot. Attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
