Residents celebrating Independence Day in Sand Springs will no longer need a permit to light off consumer-grade fireworks within city limits.

The Sand Springs City Council voted to amend the city’s fireworks regulations by approving Ordinance No. 1422, eliminating the previous permit requirement.

While this move removes a cost burden for residents, city officials say safety remains a top priority. Here’s what you need to know about the updated policy ahead of July 4.

1. No More Permits for Personal Use

Residents no longer need a city-issued permit to discharge legal fireworks. The change was made to ease financial burdens for families celebrating the holiday.

2. Fireworks Allowed Only on July 3 and 4

The new rules still limit when fireworks can be used:

  1. July 3, from 6 to 11 p.m.
  2. July 4, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

3. You Must Use a Safe Surface

Fireworks must be discharged on a noncombustible surface, such as concrete or gravel—not grass, dirt or wooded areas.

4. Supervision Rules Still Apply

An adult must be present and within 100 feet of where fireworks are being set off. That adult is also responsible for the cleanup.

5. No Fireworks on Streets or City Property

Fireworks cannot be discharged on any city-owned property or streets wider than 26 feet. This includes collector and arterial roads.

6. Commercial Fireworks Still Require a Permit

Only consumer-grade fireworks are covered under the new rule. Public displays or commercial-grade fireworks still need prior approval and a valid permit.

7. Officials Urge Safety, Especially for Pets

Sand Springs Fire Marshal Mike Nobles emphasized the city’s goal: to help residents celebrate without added financial pressure. But he also warned that fireworks can distress pets.

“We urge everyone to celebrate safely, enjoy time with friends and family and remember to be courteous to your neighbors,” Nobles said.

Officials ask residents to secure their pets during fireworks hours to avoid lost animals or pet injuries.
