What to expect as ODOT begins I-40 construction

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s six-month, $12 million rehabilitation project on the Interstate 40 bridge over Interstate 44 begins Monday, Feb. 3.

Why does the bridge need construction?

“Anyone that's driven them knows they are not in good condition. It's a very bumpy ride,” Mills Leslie, an ODOT spokesperson, said.

The rehabilitation project is aimed at improving those driving conditions along the I-40 and I-44 interchange.

“It'll be a nice clean, smooth surface when everything's done. And the bridge will be in better condition than it is,” Leslie said.

Will it affect my travel plans?

ODOT is encouraging drivers to be cautious as the 6-month project begins.

“Monday, drivers can see crews moving in at I-40 over I-40 for at that interchange,” Leslie said.

Lane closures won't begin immediately, but lower speed limits will be enforced as ODOT trucks enter and exit the roadway and crews begin work beneath the bridge.

“It would be great for drivers to find a detour, locate a different route if they can. If not, they can certainly expect some delays in the area, and there will be lower speed limits,” Leslie said.

When can I expect delays?

Delays should be expected immediately when the work begins on Feb. 3.

Leslie says the work will eventually move on top of the I-40 bridge over I-44, which will narrow traffic to one lane.

ODOT expects nightly lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. to begin in early March.

“So, once they start doing that, they'll be removing actually the pavement on the bridge and replacing it,” Leslie said.
