After years of struggling, the pastor and elders of the Mayfair Church of Christ had to make some really tough decisions. But they found out they wouldn’t have to make those decisions alone.
“Throughout the years we had a booming congregation into the eighties and then probably late 90s and early 2000s it started to decline a little bit,” said Pastor Jared Chambers.
Over the years the decline continued, dwindling this once thriving congregation down to less than one hundred members.
“Started thinking that this huge building was a little big for our ninety people and what we needed from week to week,” said Chambers.
Early last year, the tough conversations began.
“For the first time we really started asking the hard questions, do we need to think about selling this place and moving somewhere smaller,” said Chambers.
They agreed to pray for direction for one month.
“I was in the parking lot of the original location, just six blocks away and I said God you know we want to be back down here, you’re just going to have to figure this out,” said Marty Grubbs, pastor of Crossings Community Church.
Crossings Church, a thriving congregation with four locations, was started in the Mayfair area, and felt called to add a Crossings location back in the area.
“When I got the call that Mayfair church of Christ was interested in having a conversation, I was shocked,” said Grubbs.
After several meetings to sell the church came the shocking news from Chambers and the elders at Mayfair.
“They say to us in a meeting one day, we’ve thought about this and we have decided not to sell the building, and then they said, we’d like to give it to you,” said Grubbs.
So, this past Sunday, the two churches became one and worshipped as Mayfair Crossings, with Jared as the campus pastor.
“I did tell the elders in one of our meetings that either way this goes, Jared is coming with me,” said Grubbs.
Putting aside denominational differences and coming together for the community, with an attendance of close to one thousand.
“We can either argue about the petty differences or we can pull together and show our city what unity looks like,” said Grubbs.
“It said to me that God was directing all of this,” said Chambers.
Crossings Mayfair is located at 2340 Northwest 50th in Oklahoma City.
