Lightning Strike Causes Fire At Edmond Nursing Home, Residents Evacuated

Residents were evacuated after a possible lightning strike caused a fire at an Edmond nursing home early Thursday morning, according to the Edmond Fire Department.

Edmond FD said at around 3 a.m. they received initial reports of a small fire in the attic at the Bradford Village Nursing Home that appeared to be from a lightning strike.

Alarms, water sprinklers, and firefighters trudged through Bradford Village, waking residents up.

"When the lightning struck, it caught the attic on fire, and there is a fire sprinkler system that discharged and probably put out quite a bit of the fire," said Chris Denton with the Edmond Fire Department. 

Firefighters, police, and employees took Bradford Village Healthcare Facility residents to the nearby community center. 

Three residents were taken to the hospital during the evacuation because of falls.

"One resident has already returned home to a facility where they will stay for the time being, and we are confident that the other resident is going to be okay," said Donelle Harder, Bradford Village's spokesperson. 

Harder says 40 residents are being relocated throughout the metro while they fix up the facility. Only a portion of the facility was damaged, so some residents will be able to remain safely cared for at the facility.

"Damage is still being assessed, but they are quickly getting things back into place so they can get back to the rooms they are used to," said Harder.
