The Oklahoma State University family is grieving after a student was killed in a hit-and-run on campus Thursday.

OSU Police do have a suspect in custody, 21-year-old Tyler Peters.

The students say it puts things in perspective for them.

They say they can’t believe someone got killed doing something as simple as crossing the street.

OSU Police say 19-year-old OSU student Gabrielle Long was killed when she was crossing the street when the driver of a pickup hit her.

OSU student Ryli Joslin lives nearby and saw all the police arrive.

“It made me feel nervous about it because that could happen to anyone,” said Joslin. “Seeing that really puts it into perspective that it’s a real thing. Like seeing it in person.”

OSU Police said Peters initially left the scene, but officers found him and took him into custody.

Police say they are thankful for everyone who helped with their investigation.

“We’re very grateful for all the resources that we had and everybody came together to help us get close to solving this issue,” said Chief Leon Jones with OSU Police. “A lot of people to thank.”

Chief Jones says it can be hard to witness something like this or even hear about it.

“There’s a lot of people that might have seen this,” said Jones. “They may not wish to talk to us about it, but we encourage them to go seek services, counseling, if they might need to do so by contacting the University Counseling Services.”

Students hope everyone will be careful in the future when they’re driving around campus, because so many people walk to class.

“It’s kind of crazy that it happened so close to where we all are,” said Ondre Long, a student. “Normally when you see stuff like that, it’s in a different state, city, all that. But for it to be right down the road it’s kind of mind blowing.”

OSU Police are still investigating and they say Peters is cooperating with the investigation.
