Meals on Wheels is asking for volunteers to help continue its mission of providing meals to those in need, while also forming lasting relationships with clients.
The president of Meals on Wheels Tulsa said its volunteers are the only people most of the homebound people see or talk to all day.
Jay Betz said Meals on Wheels serves 1,200 elderly, disabled, homebound, and other clients in the Tulsa metro who volunteers see several times a week.
The volunteers often get the same clients, which allows them to form a continuous friendship that develops over time.
Betz said one veteran client needed a roof repair. With the help of the volunteer with whom he formed a relationship and Meals on Wheels, the client got some much-needed repairs to his home.
Betz said this is a larger example of how volunteers shape the clients' world.
“We look for changes in condition. They look healthier. There are changes that maybe we need to get them assistance on. Is there some issue with their house? Maybe it’s a safety project," said Betz.
Betz said Meals on Wheels is always looking for volunteers to serve in different capacities.
