Homicide Investigation Underway In Mayes County, Authorities Say

A homicide investigation is underway after one person was found dead just outside the town of Strang, the Mayes County Sheriff's Office said.

The Mayes County Sheriff's Office says right now one person of interest is detained, not arrested, after a deadly shooting inside a home. 

Deputies are not saying right now if the two people involved knew each other, or their genders or ages. 

Major Rod Howell says the scene is within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation and the case has been handed over to the FBI. 

Major Howell says gun violence is rare in this area. 

"Not really often," he said. "Obviously, these are good, hard-working people out here. And it's sad that something like this has happened, that someone's lost their life. So hopefully we can be objective and find out the who, what, where, when, why and how, assisting the FBI, that is."

The OSBI was also on scene helping with the investigation.

Deputies say they are still working to notify family members about what happened.
