AAA Warns Pedestrians Of Dangers Around Cars Amid Rise In Crashes

The National Retail Federation says more people expect to shop during this Thanksgiving weekend than ever before.

AAA says that means more vehicles and pedestrians will be out on the roads and parking.

4 people have been killed in the past 2 months in pedestrian-involved crashes in Tulsa.

AAA says those types of crashes have increased nearly 20% in the past 3 years.

That's why they say you should always stay alert of your surroundings and be patient.

Schools are closed for the holiday week, and college students and families are out on the roads to visit loved ones. And soon, millions of shoppers will begin gearing up for a busy Black Friday weekend.

AAA wants to make people aware of the importance of road safety by offering tips to prevent road rage and safeguard pedestrians.

AAA says traffic will be heavy around malls and shopping centers beginning early Friday morning and continue throughout the weekend.

It reports that 80% of drivers have experienced significant anger, aggression, or road rage within the last 30 days, which contributes to up to 56% of fatal crashes.

AAA says it's crucial for drivers to maintain composure and focus on safe driving practices.

To curb road rage incidents, AAA recommends

1. Don’t Offend: Avoid forcing another driver to use their brakes or turn the steering wheel in response to something you have done. Follow traffic laws and practice courteous behavior behind the wheel.
2. Be Tolerant and Forgiving: Assume that another driver’s actions are nothing personal. The other driver may just be having a really bad day. Remember, your job is not to correct or police others on their driving behaviors. Your job is to reach your destination safely.
3. Do Not Respond: Avoid eye contact, don’t make gestures, and maintain space around your vehicle. If you feel another driver is targeting you with their aggressive behavior, call 911 if needed.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol says last year, it investigated 12 vehicle-related fatalities across 5 days.

6 involved drugs or alcohol and 3 were pedestrians.

The Governors Highway Safety Association says a 40-year high in pedestrian strikes nationwide.

That's why pedestrian safety is also in the spotlight this holiday season.

AAA urges both pedestrians and motorists to share the responsibility of creating safe roadways:

1. Be visible. Wear light-colored or reflective clothing and walk in well-lit areas.
2. Stay alert and watch for vehicles about to pull away from parking spaces. Avoid distractions, put down your smartphone and do not wear headphones in both ears.
3. Follow the rules. Know your city’s traffic rules and signals for pedestrians.
4. Cross at safe places. Use crosswalks and walk on sidewalks whenever possible.
5. Make note of where you park to reduce time spent walking through parking areas.
6. Avoid drug or alcohol impairment.
