The owners of a downtown donut shop are picking up after they say someone broke in by smashing a window, which left lots of damage behind.
The store just opened five months ago, so the break-in packs a heavy punch.
It should’ve been another day of frying pastries and serving early risers at June’s Donuts and Café.
However, glass repairmen occupied the drive-thru, and signs were posted on the doors alerting customers the business was closed. On the inside, co-owner Cole Rigsby was busy cleaning up.
“The whole area was covered in glass,” he said.
Rigsby says the baker came in around midnight to start working and discovered a cat running around the restaurant.
She felt the cold air and knew something was wrong. It didn’t take long to find the broken window, which left glass everywhere and a big hit to the wallet.
“It’s not only a day lost of work that it’s caused us, we also have to repair damages,” said Rigsby. “There was a lot of product that was damaged.”
The owners say the thief tried to get cash out of the register, but nothing was inside.
A filing cabinet in the back of the store was destroyed. Computers were ruined and the restaurant was left trashed.
As upsetting as the break-in is, Rigsby says the focus is getting everything back to normal.
“We’re not going to let it get us down,” he said. “We’re going to keep at it every day like we always do. The neighborhood needs breakfast, they need the donuts.”
Tulsa Police are investigating the break-in. The owners are hopeful to re-open on Friday morning.
