The program is called Heroes in Waiting, and they are taking an anti-bullying message to schools all over the city.
“It’s touching the mental health issues that our kids are dealing with right now,” said Executive Director, Jim Stewart.
To help with that message they have enlisted the help of Thunder hype man Malcolm Tubbs.
“No one wants to feel this way. Why does it happen so often? And how can we combat that,” said Tubbs.
“Just a huge blessing that we get to see Malcolm, touch hearts live, with an audience of kids,” said Stewart.
For Tubbs, getting his message across requires him to get very personal about his past experiences.
“I knew when I was younger, elementary, middle school, high school, I needed someone to look up to, I needed a father figure, I needed someone that would be able to help me up when I was down, I didn’t have that a lot growing up,” said Tubbs.
The message being received by the students.
“I learned that there are a lot of things that go on in people’s lives and that we all have to be kind to each other regardless of what happens in the class,” said Capitol Hill eighth-grade student Ariana Gutierrez.
“Not to think about what people are going to say, and to always say kind words to everybody,” said Capitol Hill eighth-grade student Alisson Gonzalez.
The anti-bullying message is also available through a free online curriculum.
“We’ve got schools here in Oklahoma City, that called me a few days ago, they say we’re in lesson nine, can we have Malcolm come out?” said Stewart.
The curriculum is available and free to anyone online. They can also be contacted for a rally, visit www.heroesinwaiting.org
