'It's Just Gross': Guthrie Residents Battle Water Quality Issues

Some people in Guthrie have been left with a bad taste in their mouth as they battle water issues and seek answers from the city. 

"It's just really gross," said Kayla Dixon, a Guthrie resident who says she's battled water issues all eight years she's lived in Guthrie. "It's almost orangish red, and it's like it's staining the shower."

She said her water is discolored and has a foul smell.

"There's just no way around it in this town," Dixon said.

Some Guthrie residents say they've also been dealing with water quality issues for years.

"Yellow tinted water in the bathtub? That's pretty normal," Dixon said. "That's just how it is when you fill up your tub here."

Dixon said this year has been the worst. She and other neighbors in Guthrie are fighting for answers.

"Firstly that's due to an aging water distribution system," said Eddie Faulkner, Guthrie's City Manager.

The city said the system that moves water from the reservoirs to the people of Guthrie is nearly 50 years old.

"Anything pre-1975 is when you should start a replacement schedule," Faulkner said.

Faulkner says they have an active project replacing distribution lines beneath Division street, which could be contributing to the recent struggles.

"Just the replacement of the line stirs up a lot of sedimentation," he explained. "Which obviously can come out in residents and businesses faucets."

Faulkner encourages residents to speak up when they see it.

"The best way for us to correct an issue is to know an issue exists," he said. "The most important thing we do is flush out the water distribution lines."

However, some residents still aren't convinced.

"I don't think they're moving fast enough," said Dixon. "Are there other residents that are seeing the results? Because that's certainly not what I'm seeing."
