An Oklahoma City landmark will turn red Wednesday in support of the Red Cross and the organization's day of giving.

The Red Cross is among the first on the ground when disaster strikes.

“We aim to get on the ground somewhere within two hours,” Red Cross representative Matt Trotter said.

That response isn’t possible without a great deal of preparation.

“We have to be ready to go year-round now and that’s what we’re prepared to do,” Trotter said.

The Red Cross said its day of giving is one of the biggest financial asks of the year. Those funds go directly to disaster response.

“Disaster response takes a lot of money,” Trotter said. “We have to meet people's immediate needs for shelter, for food and then for essentials like prescriptions that they may have lost.”

Then come the emotional needs and the road to recovery.

All of the organization’s funding comes from donors, and the red lights on the Skydance Bridge will serve as a calling to respond to the responders.

“Whatever you can do, whatever you’re led to do,” Trotter said. “We hope that people will see this bridge lit up and think about what the Red Cross does and what it takes to provide the disaster response that we do.”
