Since 1983, a Mid-Del group home has been changing the lives for people with mild and moderate disabilities and also making a huge impact in the community.

“They live with us. We provide three meals a day and two snacks a day with their rent,” said Joel Bain, Executive Director of Mid-Del Group Home.

The group home provides work opportunities and purpose for adults with disabilities.

“They really enjoy making the lives of other people better,” said Bain.

But this isn’t just a meaningless task, the workers are providing a real service for real Oklahoma companies.

“One of the biggest ones is Century Martial Arts, we’ve had their contract for thirty-two years,” said Bain.

When they are not working inside the 17 thousand square foot workshop, they are doing jobs in the community.

“We have a contract with the city of Midwest City, we clean all the bus stops and pavilions here,” said Bain.

On most weekends, you can find them working at River Sport picking up trash.

“So, when they’re doing these contracts, they know that they are helping these companies, and when they see these things out in the community, they know that they had a hand in putting these contracts together,” said Bain.

The workers take pride in their jobs and get paid for them.

“If you walked out and you saw these individuals working, they can work circles around most people with no disabilities,” said Bain.

Because funding for group homes was cut, Bain says the waitlist to get into the program can sometimes take up to twenty years and advises families that have kids with disabilities to start early.

They have several events throughout the year and usually need volunteer support for them, to find out more about Mid-Del Group Home or to support, visit their website.
