“Today is the beginning of creating a place to stand up a new ecosystem that will reshape our community,” Mark Beffort said.
Beffort said the space is geared towards bringing innovation to life by focusing on emerging industries such as bio-med and aerospace and defense.
“This whole development is what we call convergence. The convergence has different components to it,” Beffort said.
This construction site near Northeast 9th and Stiles looks like a huge hole in the ground now, but the four acre lot will include an innovation hall, a hotel, an office tower and much more.
“It gives us the opportunity for our residents to finally punch I think at our weight class when it comes to bio and tech,” Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt said.
This new venture fosters creativity and contributes to the growth of the community.
Folks who work in the Innovation district along with middle school students in northeast Oklahoma City wrote down their hopes for the district.
They said in the next 10 years they'd like to see anything from flying cars to finding a cure for cancer.
Some people who are part of this project grew up on the northeast side.
“It's been a long time coming. I've always wanted something more for northeast Oklahoma City and finally we're getting it,” Dr. Monique Bruner said.
Community Developer Sandino Thompson said it will attract people to the area, and he hopes to create opportunities for his neighbors.
“There is a legacy of sort of revitalization that we want to take place where we're making sure that minority businesses, small businesses are able to participate in what happens and we think Innovation Hall will be a locus for that,” Thompson said.
Project leaders hope to cut the ribbon in 2024.
