The University of Tulsa is bringing back five-degree programs that were taken away a few years ago.

The provost says these programs, ranging from music to philosophy, are important to both students and faculty and they're excited to bring them back.

"Reinstatement puts us back on a trajectory to be a leading national university like Rice University in Houston or Washington University in St. Louis," Provost George Justice says.

The programs being reinstated are doctorate degrees in Physics and Chemistry, a Masters of Jurisprudence in Indian Law, and Bachelor's degrees in Music, Philosophy, and religion.

Provost Justice says programs were really important to both faculty and students.

"It's so exciting to see faculty really energized by providing high level, specialized, and yet important knowledge to students in the community," he said.

These programs were eliminated three years ago, but the new administration at the University is bringing them back as they think about the future of the school and what could separate it from other universities.

"We also want areas of particular national distinction, a Masters of Jurisprudence in Indian law is one of those areas, we have the opportunity to be the leading university with our law school in looking at issues in native American law," Justice says.

Justice says he's looking forward to the future for the University of Tulsa.

"Our goal is to make this, it is a small, distinctive research university with a liberal arts core and yet high-quality professional programs, all of these programs will make TU attractive to students, to people in the community interested in investing, and on the national higher education scene," he said.

Justice says students will be able to begin taking classes in these programs in the fall of 2023.
