OKCPS is working to build a more diverse and bilingual workforce throughout the district.

Though college is becoming more expensive, a $180,000 grant from Bank of America is allowing more young high school graduates to pursue their dream of teaching debt-free through the OKCPS teacher pipeline program.

"I think it's a wonderful experience working with these kids helping them," Melanie Garcia said.

Garcia, who went through the pipeline program, assists in an elementary school classroom. One day, she said she hopes to have a class of her own.

"I can't wait because I am enjoying my job right now as a paraprofessional, but I can't wait to become a teacher," said Garcia.

Through the pipeline program, Garcia doesn't have to worry about the cost of tuition, books or fees.

Mary Mélon-Tully, president and CEO of The Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation, said Garcia and other students in the program can graduate from college with her bachelor’s degree and teaching certification completely debt-free while working with OKCPS.

"Our student population is very diverse in Oklahoma City Public Schools," Mélon-Tully said. "More and more, that is growing throughout the state of Oklahoma."

The participants must graduate from OKCPS, be bilingual or a person of color to participate. Participants must make a three-year commitment to work with OKCPS in order to participate in the program.

"Being bilingual has helped me because some kids speak English and Spanish and it makes them feel more comfortable," Garcia said.

Garcia said she plans to help those students for many years to come.

"I am looking forward to becoming a teacher," Garcia said.
