Two construction workers doing work on a sewer line were found dead in an Edmond manhole Tuesday after falling 25 feet.

The Deputy Fire Chief in Edmond said at 3:43 Tuesday afternoon, the company doing the work reported that the two workers fell.

A specialized rescue team went in almost two hours later, but by that time both men had died.

The fire department said the pipe didn't show any signs of failure.

Federal safety investigators are now looking into how the accident happened.

Firefighters say the oxygen levels down where the men fell were dangerously low.

“Our air quality when we arrived on scene, in the hole, was 18.5% oxygen. Which in our terms, that's an oxygen deficient atmosphere,” said Chris Denton, Deputy Chief of the Edmond Fire Department.

The fire department did not release the names of the two men.
