A fun family weekend at a Pottawatomie County river turned into a nightmare.

Law enforcement confirms a man drowned while trying to save a group of kids.

Deputies tell News 9 the group drove in from out of state to spend time at Soggy Bottom Trails in Wanette.

According to the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Department, a group of kids had got caught in a rip tide out in the river and several adults jumped in to rescue them. However, while they were working to get them out, one man got sucked underwater.

"Took him down about 150 yards downstream and sadly he drowned," said Steven Sample, Pottawatomi County Deputy. "But with a life lost, they rescued three or four children."

First responders were able to pull him out and perform CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name has not been released yet.

We're told two other parents, along with a deputy, were transported for injuries.

They're all three expected to be okay.
